The Research Institute for Physical Chemical Problems of the Belarusian State University was organized on the base of  research groups worked at the chairs of BSU chemical faculty according to the decision of the Council of Ministers of the BSSR  ¹ 371 dated November 22nd, 1977 and the Institute begun to function since May 1st, 1978. After the state re-registration at the end of 1999 it is referred to as the Establishment of the Belarusian State University «Research Institute for Physical Chemical Problems» (RI PCP BSU).

            The main tasks of the Institute are:

·                   organization of R & D and carrying out of the work on the most topical problems of chemistry and related sciences; scientific and innovative activity in the field of chemistry and chemical technology;

·                   training of (in cooperation with educational divisions of the BSU) QSE with higher education on chemical specialties; development of scientific and pedagogical staff of the higher qualification - Candidates of Sciences (equivalent to Ph.D.) and Doctors of Sciences (equivalent to Prof.) - for the scientific-engineering complex and the national economy of Belarus as well.

Since 1978 to the present the Institute was headed by the following scientists:

GAEVSKAYA Tatiana Vasil`evna

Candidate of science (Chemistry).

 Director of the RI PCP BSU from  May,  2009

The  field of scientific interests: solid state chemistry; chemistry of compositional materials

           For a long period the following scientists have been working and heading scientific divisions of the Institute: academician of the NAS of Belarus Lesnikovich A.I.; Corresponding Members of the Academy of Sciences of the BSSR Tishchenko I.G. and Starobinets G.L.; Doctors of Sciences (Chemistry) professors Vecher A.A., Petryaev E.P., Matusevich P.A., and other scientists.

At present the Institute consists of 20 scientific divisions where about 180 staff members (including 165 researchers) are working. The research staff includes 7 Doctors of Sciences (one Academician and one Corresponding Member of the NAS of Belarus) and 71 researchers with Ph.D. degree. More over 13 of Doctors of Sciences  including two Academician r and one Corresponding Member of the NAS of Belarus   are working on continuing basis  and realize scientific supervision of the institute divisions

           Over the lifetime of the Institute the purposeful work on the development of the higher qualification staff has carried out. 22 of the thesis for a Doctor's degree and 180 of Ph.D. thesis have been  prepared  and defended in the divisions of the Institute. The Establishment of the Belarusian State University «Research Institute for Physical Chemical Problems» is one of the key institutions of the chemical direction in the Republic of Belarus. The scientific and engineering potential of the RI PCP BSU allows to solve complicated complex problems in the different fields of chemistry and chemical technology and to realize the scientific and engineering support of  the separate manufacturing department and some branches. of the enterprises of chemical and pharmaceutical industries as well as to the activity dealing with recycling of various wastes of man-caused character and organization of low-capacity and science intensive chemical industries.

The Institute is determined as a head organization-executor of the state scientific and engineering programs such as «Novel medicines» (subprogram of «Medicines») and «Chemical technology and industry» (subprogram of «Low-capacity  chemistry»), the state complex program of scientific researches of «Chemicals and chemical materials», the state program of the directed fundamental investigations of «Physiologically active substances» for the period of 2006-2010.

As a result of the carried out investigations 53 monographs and collections of proceedings, materials of the conference, reference media and 20 tutorials for the students of chemical and other specialties, seven from the tutorial have the signature of Ministry of Education of the Belarus Republic  were published. Institute collaborators were published  more than  4847 scientific papers  and 4252 abstracts of reports, 1341 scientific papers and 931 abstracts were published far abroad.

In 2004-2008 ninety objects of new technique, technologies and materials were created and  the most part  of them were elaborated for the practical usage. The objects of the industrial property carried out at the Institute were defended by 795 author certificates of the USSR and patents for the invention. 11 certificates on trade mark registration have been received. 11 license contracts on the right of the usage of the objects of industrial property were made.

For the period from 2004 to 2008 the developments of the Institute were conferred by 29 medals (eleven gold, nine silver, eight  bronze and one special) and  by11 diplomas at international exhibitions and salons.

The collective of the RI PCP BSU was awarded by Honor Diploma of the State Committee on Science and Technology of the Republic of Belarus and Honor Diploma of the Ministry of Education of the Republic of Belarus for the achievements in the organization of scientific investigations in field of chemistry, training of the highly qualified staff, development and introduction of the advanced chemical technologies in 1998.

According to the results of yearly republican competition between state scientific organizations and scientific service organizations RI PCP BSU was recognized as the winner (2005 y. – first place, 2006 y. –  second place, 2007 y. -  first place) and put on the Republican board of Honor (The decree of the President of the Republic of Belarus ¹ 279 of April 28th, 2006).

 The research-and-production unitary enterprises of «Unidragmet of the BSU» and «Unihimprom of the BSU» were organized in structure of the BSU in 1999-2001 based on the structural divisions, staff potential as well as R & D works of the Institute to produce import-substituting and science intensive products of low-capacity chemistry.
